Editorial: Top Five Best Songs to Languidly Stare out of a Window while Smoking a Cigarette To

We've got a new top five up on Always Sometimes Anytime and it's a tongue-in-check look at the songs we endulge when we're you know like totally depressed with all of our first world problems. You can have a read over here.

Editorial: Slash

I continue to keep you up-to-date on everything completely meaningless with my Naturally Spirited column. This week it's loosely about my insecurities over being a slashie with no real vocation, but on closer inspection just reveals how much I hate Gwyneth Paltrow. You can check it out over here.

Shoot: Pop Up!

Two people from outside of Auckland were up at once and so I got together with them to do a couple of shoots about six months ago. Photographer David James (Wellington) and Sophie Doull (Christchurch) shot this editorial, and because of it Always Sometimes Anytime got mentioned in Elle Magazine Korea, which is pretty awesome. It looks TINY on this blog though so if you want to actually see the images, and the lovely Sophie, head over here.

Shoot: The Magician's Daughter

I've been doing so many shoots lately, but they're being slowly drip fed into the public domain. This is the first, and was shot in West Auckland with the lovely Anmari and Fiona Quinn. That horse was pretty rad too, until he got scared of the smoke machine and became a problem.

Editorial: Top Five Harry Potter Moments

So I run Always Sometimes Anytime and in the Sometimes section we write about all of our frivolous loves and hates. Because a few of the writers who contribute to the site - including myself - are MASSIVE Harry Potter fans, we had to do an impromptu Top Five with our favourite moments from the movies, most of which involves Sirius, Lupin and / or Snape because THEY ARE ALL BABES. Head over here to check it out.

Shoot: Room L4

At the start of the year I got to work with the very talented Jessica Sim, shooting Cheryl Walbridge, one of my favourite new faces, for the first time. We shot at a motor lodge in Parnell and attempted to re-create the mysterious, sexualised world of David Lynch and his leading ladies in productions like Twin Peaks and Lost Highway. Megan Christiansen also shot a beautiful video for this, and you can check that out as well as the clothing credits over here.

Editorial: Interview Action

There's going to be a bit of retrospective posting going on for the first couple of weeks of this blog so bear with me. The last few months have seen some exceptional releases by bands I admire, and as a staff writer at UnderTheRadar I have been lucky enough to interview a few of them. Click on the links to read chats with:

Cut Off Your Hands return after a tumultuous end to the international tour in support of their debut album You and I with sophomore Hollow.

The Adults is the New Zealand supergroup headed up by Jon Toogood and featuring the likes of Shayne Carter, Julia Deans and Ladi6. They head out on tour this weekend in support of their album release, but note all of the Auckland shows are already sold out.

Vietnam War are one of those bands from that alt-country Grey Lynn crew, and after writing and playing live for the past five years or so have just released their debut album.

Coco Solid is one of New Zealand's most inspiring multi-disciplinary artists and has just released her latest full length album, the Pacific Rims mix tape.

Death Cab for Cutie have just released another full length album Codes and Keys.

Wu Lyf are the weird, originally anonymous band-slash-movement from the UK and they discussed their debut album and how they dealt with all the hype that currently surrounds them.

Okkervil River led by seminal wordsmith Will Sheff have just released I Am Very Far, the follow-up to exceptional double concept-albums The Stage Names and The Stand Ins.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra is the new project from The Mint Chick's Ruban Neilson, and they just released their exceptional self-titled debut album and are touring the States in support of it with bands like Yuck and Toro Y Moi.

Battles have just released Gloss Drop, their almost-didn't-happen follow up to critically acclaimed debut Mirrored. The video for single 'Ice Cream' is incredible, check it out:

Have just interviewed a bunch of artists including Black Lips, Handsome Furs, The Horrors, Kimbra and more, which will be coming out in print and online in the next few weeks, will keep you updated.

Shoot: The Freedom Projects

This has been an ongoing project between photographer Sara Orme and Always Sometimes Anytime, who has been recruiting stylists and writers to explore the idea of Freedom as laid out in Jonathan Franzen's incredible 2010 novel.
We shot first in the beautiful Kare Kare at the start of the year, then went to the Coromandel and stayed at the lovely Megan Christiansen's bach (who is also the videographer behind the exceptional clips that accompany the stills) and have just shot Freedom Three in Rotorua which will be up online very soon.
The above images are a conglomeration of Freedom One and Two.

Shoot: Turning Japanese

I recently went down to Wellington for my brother's graduation - congratulations Riley! - and while I was there I got to collaborate with my good pal (and amazing photographer) Louise Hatton through a shoot for my old work place and the best clothing store in New Zealand, Good as Gold. We recruited model Rosie Herdman and did a little studio shoot around the Oriental elements that have been infiltrating fashion of late. Check it out and head to Always Sometimes Anytime to view the shoot in full and the credits.

Column: Let's Get Out to the Country

There's a new culture website from New Zealand called Naturally Spirited that posts interesting news and original work about fashion, art and music. They kindly asked me to contribute a weekly column, and I submitted my fifth this week.
It basically argues that our working week has become 24-7 and thus when we go on holiday the LAST place we want to find ourselves is in a complicated four-way romantic situation with artists-slash-psychopaths. Or something. You can have a read of it here, as well as earlier submissions about the really important stuff like Harry Potter.

Hi.

Hey there. This feels a little bit like writing a cover letter - which is perhaps the most awkward thing to pen - but let me introduce myself regardless.
I'm a stylist and writer working largely in the domain of editorial, and while the disciplines of styling and writing may seem worlds apart I basically just want to express ideas in whatever medium is most suitable.
I contribute to several magazines, am a staff writer at UnderTheRadar and edit and contribute to Always Sometimes Anytime.
This is simply a place for me to bring all the work I've been doing together, and I hope you enjoy.
